Actor Timothee Chalamet: How an 'Unexpected Movie Release’ has boosted Bob Dylan’s music catalog

Before this past Christmas, Bob Dylan’s “Song to Woody” was far from one of his most-streamed songs; neither are most of the tracks from Dylan’s 1962 debut album. But all that changed over the holiday season, when “Song to Woody” jumped from an average of 4,000 streams a day to a robust 55,000. And that’s merely one example of what you might call the Chalamet Effect on Dylan’s catalog. 

Long before filming even began, those involved in Dylan’s records and publishing wondered what impact a film starring Timothée Chalamet would have on his streaming and record sales. 

Since the movie opened on Christmas day, the combination of critical acclaim, impressive box office returns ($70 million as of last week), and new attention from Chalamet’s fanbase has helped give Dylan’s catalog a noticeable bump. 

Dylan’s songs got about one million streams per day a year ago; thanks to the movie, that number is now closer to 4 million. 

 

After years of warning of threat to grassroots and artist’s viability, UK acts have dropped out of the Global Best-sellers chart

According to figures from BBC News, no UK artist featured on either list last year.

Albums by Coldplay, Charli XCX and Dua Lipa did not make either list. The highest ranked artist was Artemas who came in 15th with ‘I Like The Way You Kiss Me’ on the global best-selling singles list.

Both lists were mainly dominated by US acts including Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter and Kendrick Lamar.

Previously, UK acts appeared in one or both of the top 10 lists every year since 2003.

“I’m not saying this is doomsday, it’s fixable but this should be the canary down the mine to the UK music industry.

“We should all be very concerned. The UK’s share of the global music market has reduced from 17 per cent to 10 per cent in the last seven years.

Kendrick Lamar earns first UK Number 1 single with 'Not Like Us'


Who says being a hater doesn't pay off? Today, Kendrick Lamar earns his first UK Number 1 single with the dizzying Not Like Us, nine months after its original release.

Following an increase in attention after Kendrick’s performance of the diss track at his Super Bowl LIX halftime show, Not Like Us re-entered the Official Singles Chart Top 10 at Number 2 last week, and today ascends to the top spot!
